she has powdered sugar dreams
in many pastel hues

The fact that a helper of the tooth fairy was working in a bakery selling sugary sweet things that would only ever make the customers need to brush their teeth all the more - it had a hint of irony to it. A hint of irony that made Zel all the more amused when she walked through the door with the little bell chiming as she stepped in. Zel always enjoyed walking in to the warmth and the smell of spun sugar or frosting melting on cupcakes still warm from the oven. All of the wafts of chocolate, the little aroma of faint strawberry, and the tart zap to the senses as Hazel decided to add some raspberry filling to something.

Zel had all of the ideas for making a snow-cake. Ever since meeting Jack the way she did. With the boy just laying in the snow like it was not cold in the least. The very memory made her cheeks a little pink and she tried to hide her face from Hazel as she tied on her apron and started walking to her station, her hair in front of her face in its choppy little wisps like perhaps it might hide the blush. Jack. Was here. And safe from Pitch. Well...at least one of them was.

"Hey Hazel," Itzel said in her frail voice.

She was never the most vocal creature and Hazel knew it. But today with thoughts about spun sugar and white frosting making a cake that was symbolized the snow and the frost - well...it was making her a little more tight-lipped than normal. It was now associated with Jack. Jack Frost.

So as Zel got to her workstation and looked at the orders to do for the day - she tried to keep her icy blue eyes away from Hazel lest she ask questions. Because she knew that the minute she did start asking about Zel's chipper mood or her goo goo eyes then it would be a day of trying not to smile or giggle or get rosy cheeks as she laid the pastel pink icing along the petitfours for the new baby girl that one of their most loyal customers was having.

Good morning & good night
I wake up in twilight
It's gonna be alright

It's always a good time!
The day was steady. People buzzing in and out as they bought things for sweethearts and treats for themselves. She loved days like this, she really did. The snow outside make everything sparkle like freshly frosted doughnuts. Speaking of doughnuts.... the timer went off and as she shut the register, she pretty much danced to the oven. Pulling her mittens on, she pulled them out and inhaled deeply, sighing in content as the chocolate cake smell filled the shop with a velvet feeling. As she sat them on the cooling rack, she looked over at the little tart shells Itzel had made the previous day and decided to experiment. Walking towards the front of the store, she made a quick walk-through to make sure everyone was alright and if they needed anything.

Fluttering back to the tart shells, she pulled out her homemade raspberry filling from the shelf and a bowl of sugar frosted strawberries from the fridge. Everything she made was from scratch, and involved only the freshest ingredients. Sometimes she lost costumers over it, because one week she would have one flavor selling like hot cakes, and the next week wouldn't have any to sell. It wasn't her fault her suppliers couldn't keep up with her demands. she wasn't going to take soft strawberries or frozen blueberries. Sorry, but she didn't like taking short-cuts. Even as a squirrel, she refused to eat anything that wasn't at it's peak.

As she made little faces at the tarts, trying to figure out how it would work, she had a little light bulb go off above her head. Grabbing a lemon and the zester grater, she rolled the lemon on the counter to detach the actual lemon from the rind, and ground off some lemon zest, cut the lemon in half, then squeezed the juices out into a bowl, tossing the used up lemon in the trash. Wiping her hands off on a clean towel, she mixed a bit of the lemon juice with the raspberry filling, and proceeded to fill the little tart shells.

Just as she was putting the last sugar frosted strawberry on a tart, she heard the little bell above the door jingle and she looked up, a smile plastered to her lips. "Itzel! You're here!" She giggled loudly, noticing the faint blush upon her co-workers cheeks. Oooohhhhh something happened! She watched as the young girl made her way to her station, tying her apron behind her back. Grinning, Hazel put the used up far and dishes into the dishwasher and shut it with her hip, pushing the start button and washing her hands. Itzel was quiet, but that didn't mean Hazel didn't love her any less. She made the best tart shells, and little pastries. She was even helping Hazel branch out into the world of sugar-free, with the help of Titania. So seeing the girl with a blush upon her cheeks only purses Hazel's curiosity even more.

Crossing her arms, she leaned against the girls work station, her cupcake spatula sticking out of the pocket of her Tenth Doctor apron. Heck, if she could, she would have a Sonic Screwdriver spatula, but no one had branched out that far yet. She watched as she started to work on the petitfours that were due tomorrow, and smirked. The way her small hands worked with such precision and speed made Hazel slightly jealous. She must of had experience working with small objects before coming here.

"Soooooooo," she cooed to her co-worker. "What happened?" Hazel knew she wouldn't tell her right away, and she stumbled at one of the pieces she was making, she couldn't help but grin. Today was going to be fun~ Pushing herself up from the station to wait on a customer at the register, she bagged up a cinnamon roll with strawberry frosting and slide the man's card. "There you go Hun. Have a nice day!" Turning to look at the girl again, she decided to change the subject. "Do you like what I did with your extra tart shells? Go on, taste one. They taste like raspberry lemonade with a strawberry garnish." Everyone needed a little bit of summer, so why not give them lemonade in the middle of December?

she has powdered sugar dreams
in many pastel hues

When Hazel merely greeted Zel as she walked in and went to her station without bustling over, she thought for just a moment that maybe she was safe. Maybe she wouldn't notice the blush and the telling smile. Zel did manage to look up to see how colorful Hazel was today and she thought maybe complimenting her on just how bright she was would help deter her boss from noticing anything else. Like how Zel was a proper mess with how utterly she was crushing on Jack Frost and giddy with the idea that she found him again. But low and behold, before Zel could even get the words out to ask how long it took to get rainbow nails like that, Hazel was there in front of her. Grinning and asking what happened.

Zel couldn't help but let out a little surprised noise as she felt herself miss the mark on a curlicue along the side of her cake. And blinking up at Hazel with surprise, she had her mouth open to make some kind of answer. But thankfully she fluttered away for a moment and Zel's eyes wandered back to her far too angular curlicue. She delicately took a tiny metal spatula and carved under the top layer that she was working on in just that spot, smoothing over the icing so that she could start fresh on that particular little curve. But as Hazel came back, Itzel put her spatula next to her discarded icing back and looked up at the tart Hazel was talking about.

"Sounds amazing," she said with hands reaching out to grab one. She had made the tart shells herself yesterday and once she was done with the order for the holiday party that one of their customers were having, she ended up having made too many. But Hazel always found something creative to do with extra product. Zel's favorite was the french vanilla lemon poppy-seed cheesecake bites. Those sold out nearly each time Hazel made them and they got calls requesting whole cakes instead of bites a few times a week. It was definitely a favorite for a reason too, Hazel knew her craft.

As she took a bite of the tart with the freshest strawberry she had tasted in a while, she couldn't help but think again at just how talented Hazel was. Her smile was genuine as she finished the bite that was bursting with flavor along her lips.

"And it is amazing too!" Zel said with a slight giggle.

She took another bite and set the little tart on a white paper doilie that was around the tools that Zel used to decorate her cakes. She finished licking the tart lemon and sweet raspberry from the corners of her mouth before she tried her hand at keeping the conversation in this line of tarts and Hazel's brilliance because yeah, that was a good idea. She looked up to Hazel, hoping she would take the bait and then maybe Zel wouldn't have to die of overload on blushing.

"What inspired you to concoct that?"

Success. The look upon Itzel's face as she took a bite of her Lemon-raspberry tart was just as she expected it to be. Smiling proudly, she started putting them on a serving tray, marking a little purple cupcake note card with "NEW ITEM! RASPBERRY LEMONADE TARTS! $1!" Then she signed it with a little acorn, letting the customers know it was an original item. These wouldn't stay in stock long.

Placing the serving platter in the front of the display case, she heard Itzel's muffled question through the glass. Inspiration. The one thing that always befuddled interviewers when they tried something Hazel made up on the fly. "Well, it wasn't really that hard." Pulling her head back out and shutting the door, she waved to an elderly couple who always ate brunch here. One lemon poppy-seed cheesecake bite for the wife, and a cranberry oatmeal muffin with orange zest. Nice couple, really.

Taking her place on the bar-stool beside Itzel's station, Hazel pulled a leg up and wrapped her arm around it, resting her cheek against her knee. "I'll answer you a question with a question." She couldn't help smirking- it was rare to see Itzel in a state such as this, and Hazel fully intended to get to the bottom of the icing barrel.

"Micah, actually." He inspired a lot of what she made. One of her biggest sellers: the biscuit cookies, were made for him the first time he opened up and told her what he was really craving. Never before in her human life had she panicked over someone's reaction to her baking as she did when she brought him the first batch. He fell in love with them, and swung her around in the biggest hug she'd ever gotten. Then she put a twist in it, and offered a fresh fruit counterpart to those who wanted it sweeter.

Raising an eyebrow, she blushed and giggled at Itzel's reaction. Tucking some hair behind her ear, she let the leg that was hanging down from the stool to sway a bit. "Oh don't give me that look 'Zel! One of these days, you'll find the guy that makes you want to create new and wondrous things to ease the black hole that's hidden away in his stomach." And boy could her Micah eat. She sometimes wondered if he really did have a black hole inside of him.

Drumming her fingers upon her leg, she watched in a few moments of silence as the girls fingers worked their way around her project. "I know she said she didn't want a topper for those petitfours, but I have the cutest edible cherry blossoms that would look fantastic on there." Lifting her head to get a better view of what she was doing, she added, "Don't you think so? We can sugar glaze them a soft orange to off-set the pink."

While it was great to be the owner and be the one in charge of making all the decisions, she really did enjoy having someone else to work with. It gave her another mind for hers to bounce off of. While one could ponder ideas with themselves, it was always dangerous to get into heavy brainstorms alone. One thought too many and soon you'll be taking cover behind the counter as the thoughts bombard you.

Bringing herself back to her original plan, she dropped the bombshell: "What has you all flustered and pink?" Smirking when she found the nerve that made Itzel turn redder than a fresh picked cherry, Hazel swayed about in satisfaction. "Seeeeeeeeeeeee?" She pointed at her flushing face. "There's more color in your face than there is in your hair now! C'mon 'Zel, spill the sugar!"

she has powdered sugar dreams
in many pastel hues

Zel admired her boss's energy and knew she likely adored her for the simple fact that she was like her mother, like Toothiana. But where Tooth was all bright and talkative, Hazel instead was bubbly and sugar-coated with just that right amount of sweetness that you grew to know her smiles were all sincere. Zel just guessed she gravitated towards the lively personas that she found in her life. Even as a fluttering fairy with all of her colors, she remained much calmer than her sisters and mother, more prone to quiet actions and meek smiles than any bursting of energetic enthusiasm.

But when that magnetic spark about Hazel was directed in anyone's direction when she wanted to know something it was hazardous indeed. Itzel could feel herself trying to keep her eyes trained on her little cakes. Carefully making one after the other and setting them aside on their little pink paper squares set aside from the wax paper Zel was working on. She tried not to pay too close attention to just how inquisitive Hazel's eyes were or how devious she looked hovering like that around her. It reminded Zel of when she and her sisters would swarm around Toothiana and cling to her with little fluttering smiles - expecting a sweet word from their mother.

But if she and her sisters were wanting a little stroking under their feathers and a happy word from their Mamatooth, then Hazel was eager waiting for Zel to just pour out all of her secrets so that they could devour them like truffles and talk about it in excited whispers. Zel found her cheeks all the more rosy with the idea and she bit her bottom lip to make it look like she was really concentrating when in fact she was trying not to let Hazel hear her teeth chattering from fear of telling someone just how much she found Jack taking over her thoughts.

But then Zel felt her hand finish the curlicue it was doing before Hazel spoke up again. Zel's eyes were now wide and looking over to Hazel because she mentioned Micah - which means maybe she knew. And all the more Zel felt her throat going dry as Hazel made seemingly casual conversation about how a boy would inspire and motivate Zel herself in such a way. She felt light-headed now. Hazel must know. How did she give herself away?

She blinked her big blue eyes and tried to look at the cakes with a determination that would bring her back and away from this conversation. Was she really ready to tell Hazel just how much she had liked Jack? Even from the first moment he scooped her into his hands and saved her, uttering with concern 'You okay Babytooth?' - she was smitten with him even then and the more time she spent with him the more it grew. But...how could she explain that to others without sounding batty and insane?

When she came back to the moment and watched Hazel place the dainty little candied flower there atop the cake, Zel's eyes lit up and she smiled as she turned around and grabbed a little tin with some edible pearl sprinkles and she placed a few in the center with a dab of icing - like the flowers had their own little cluster of pollen. It was quite precious when it was all put together.

After making Zel turn even more blush-ridden along her features, Hazel asked just what was going on. Itzel couldn't help but laugh then because of the comment about being more colorful than her hair. She looked up to Hazel and let out a sigh before pulling a stool over herself and slumping her shoulders like she was releasing the weight of the world as she spoke softly and watched Hazel with her ice blue eyes.

"Well...the boy I liked for a while and then lost? You see I found him again. Completely random and...he just has me all tangled for him again."

Good morning & good night

It's gonna be alright

It's always a good time!
Perched upon the stool, playing with the necklace Micah had given her; Hazel watched as Itzel ignored her questions and went about making her tiny cakes. Huffing in minor annoyance, she got up and made her way towards the storage cabinet, and grabbing the small package of edible cherry blossoms. Coming back with her goal, she pulled the tray of completed cakes towards her, putting a blossom on top of each. Smiling, she held one up, and blinked as Itzel topped it with a couple pearl sprinkles.

"Great minds think alike, eh 'Zel?" Smiling up at her little colorful companion, Hazel noticed that her eyes looked like they were about to overflow with secrets. Yes, good. This is what Hazel wanted. Itzel's face flushed harder and Hazel just could notkeep the grin off her face. This was her week to learn all the little nitty gritty from her friends. Next thing she knew, Itzel was pulling a stool up beside her. Oh yes, Hazel was about to be overloaded with information.

Listening intently to what Itzel had to say, Hazel couldn't help but stare in awe and wonder. Long lost lover? "Oooohhhhhhhhhhh!" she squealed, and jumping up from her stool she grabbed Itzel by her small delicate hands and jumped up and down in a small circle with her. "Itzel, this is great! Oh, did you have anything planned for him?" She stood still, and stared out the big glass window as an idea struck her. "OhmygoodnessItzeldoyouknowwhatthismeans?" she squealed out in one long drawn breath.

Dropping her co-workers hands she raced to the back, grabbing a sketchpad and her colored pencils she scurried back to Itzel and cleared a space on the table for the pencils. Perching herself back atop her stool, she stared down at the paper than back at her friend. "We need to make him a cake!!!!!!!!!!" She pointed a pencil at Itzel as she started to open her mouth to protest. "If you don't help me, I'll do it all by myself, and you know what'll happen then." Oh yes. Hazel would take creative lead and make something that would scream Itzel and find this mystery boy, and give it to him.

"So. My Dearest Itzel. I would suggest coming up with ideas before I take all the glory" Her orders could wait. She didn't have that many anyways. She could do them at the end of the day, or before she opened shop tomorrow. Right now, she had a goal, and that goal revolved around helping her Itzel out. "Yes. So. Tell me, colors, designs, themes. You can't just leave me hanging like this Itzel!" She was far too excited, maybe she should make some tea? Nah. She'll be fine for awhile.

Itzel nearly fell from her seat on the stool, which would have not only hurt but would have been ironic since as a fairy she perched on far tinier things. But Hazel had gotten so very excited all of a sudden and now Itzel was trying to catch up with just what was going on and what the redhead was so very intent on doing. Zel cringed when she saw that Hazel was so very whipped up in the storm of creation. Not just for the shop this time, but the added excitement of making a cake for Jack had her going twice as fast with her words. Almost coming out in little chirps like a bird or a squirrel.

"...Oh dear," was all Zel could say in a whisper as she fiddled with her short cut hair and tugged at the fabric of her apron in a nervous way. A cake? For Jack? That spelled all kinds of things that Zel was not intent on even telling Jack in a whisper. But Hazel was intent.

She mentioned something about adding ideas in or Hazel would take matters into her own hands. Which is something that had Zel's eyes growing wider. Two icy blue orbs of worry as she thought about the prospect of Jack getting a Hazel cake creation after the redhead knew that Itzel did in fact like him. It would be riddled with hearts and all kinds of things. She might maybe be able to hide the cake? But oh no, if Hazel was good at one thing it was sniffing out people and finding them like a squirrel would find acorns or a bee finding honeysuckles. It was just a talent she had.

So Zel got down from her stool and went over to where Hazel was with her book - the book where all her creations came to life with detailed ideas. Hazel was brilliant in that way, but Zel looked at her with a look that was as pleading as it was thankful, a small smile as quiet as her tiny voice as she stood next to Hazel.

"Well a tinier cake would be best. And...no color? I mean, if anything variations of white and pale blue. He really enjoys snow and frost and winter in general," Itzel couldn't say that without a smile - "So I was thinking something with white frosting covered in those clear sugar crystals? Maybe a few of those larger edible pearls like snowballs I guess. Oh and the flavor...do we have any more of that vanilla bean mix?"

She looked up to Hazel with a blink and wondered if the girl would understand the importance of simplicity in this moment - and just how much Jack did enjoy snow and how vanilla bean or peppermint would likely bring out the winter spirit the most. She wondered if Hazel would throw the whole idea out or add subtle ideas to the notion of a snow cake as well. It was always a toss up and Itzel waited eagerly to see what would blossom on the page of that sketchbook of Hazel's.

Good morning & good night
I wake up in twilight
It's gonna be alright
We don't even have to try
It's always a good time!
Smirking as Itzel made her way with a stool to sit closer to Hazel, she knew she had won. Taking the moment to listen to Itzel's ideas, Hazel saw the ideas flood across her vision. The more she spoke about snow and frost and blues, her swirls started to look like silver frost, painting a picture of lace on the blank sketchbook in front of her. Reaching over and pulling all of her blues out.

No color. Pfft. Itzel, you dear girl. There will be color, you silly little thing. Taking the Blizzard Blue, she grew a circle. She shaded around where the shadows would be, and grabbed her Cadet Blue and started to make a focal point where the "frost" would start at. Bringing the frost out, she gave it some quick details of lace. Silver. That's what she needed. She detailed the lace swirls further, giving them a chilled look to them. It was simple, clean, and elegant all at once. "We can hit it with the airbrush for the silver, I think. Use the shimmer silver, though."

Another one crossed her mind. White and pale blue. Picking up her Almond, she started sketching out a flat circular cake. Instead of making it flat around the edges, she curved it around. Flat edges were boring. "Probably need fondant for this one....," she muttered under her breath as she continued to sketch it out. Cornflower. She started to quickly draw smaller circles. Like little pearls that were lightly frosted. They swirled and took their own path along the top and sides of the cake. Picking her Silver back up, she sketched a large snowflake toward the edge of the cake, half embedded in it, where the small circles were slowly meeting towards. "Yes, snowflakes...."

This called for Periwinkle. This was larger than the others, against Itzel's request. But she started drawing an actual snowflake. There were six larger stems to the snowflake, then six smaller arms in between the larger ones. The smaller stems were almost like arrows, pointing towards the center of the cake, while the larger stems were thin until the very end. Then they branched out into small elegant triangles. She shaded some places that she felt needed it, and held the book up for Itzel to see the design better.

"It'll be harder than the other two, but it'll be fun! We can make it a layered cake too, so when he bites into it'll all explode in his mouth and it'll be minty and crunchy, and, and!!!!!!!" She quickly put the sketchbook into Itzel's lap and scurried back to the sprinkle cabinet, yanking on the door and letting a groan pass her lips as she dug in her pockets before pulling out the set of keys. Shoving the key into the lock, she unlocked her cabinet and flung the doors open. She swore she heard a chorus singing in the background.

Pushing bottles and containers aside, she cried out an "AHA!" of victory as she pulled out an unopened container. Making her way back to Itzel, she showed her the large container split into fifths, each containing a different kind of sprinkle. "Itzel, look! I got this back in.... July? I think? Anywaysthatpartisn'timportant! What's important is they're winter themed! There's shimmering white snowflake sprinkles, a light blue powder, different sized pearls! Look at them! LookatthemItzel! They change color in the light!" She moved the container about, watching them shift from blue, to silver, to a light peach color. "They're perfect!"

She was bouncing on her heels now. She was almost biting her tongue to keep from chittering like her old self. That would just be rude. Being brought out of her feelings for Itzel's cake, she put the sprinkles on the stool she was sitting on and twirled to the counter. "Hi! Sorry about that!" She giggled and tucked some hair behind her ear. "Four of them? That's no problem! That'll be four dollars, please." Using her little tongs, she placed four of the freshly made Raspberry Lemonade tarts from their resting place and put them into a small box with a clear top. Placing a small bow on the box, she exchanged the box for the five dollar bill that was handed to her, and as she punched it all in the register. "They're fresh too! Just about an hour old!" She beamed a smile at the customer and handed him his change.

Turning back to Itzel as he walked away, she jumped up and down in place for a minute, clapping her hands together. "So? What do you think 'Zel?!" She bit her lower lip as she waited. "Yo-you can add to it, if you want! We.. we don't have to go with those!" It was, Itzel's cake after all. So the more imput she had, the better it would be.

she has powdered sugar dreams
in many pastel hues

Zel was still sitting there trying to take in every idea that Hazel's brilliant mind was concocting. She had only thought of something simple and small for Jack if anything at all. But somehow Hazel had locked onto the idea of snowflakes and frost and just everything that was Jack. She chewed on her bottom lip and found her hands messing with the fabric at the hem of her apron - worry evident on her face. She loved the ideas, they were creative and full of merit and would truly be something Jack might treasure.

But that was just the problem. This would take time and attention to detail and the end product would look like it was made with such affection and devotion. That would spell disaster for poor Itzel who was, in her mind, invisible to him. Something like making him a cake was already commitment enough. But making such an exquisite cake that would show just how much thought she, and Hazel, had put into it...that seemed dangerous.

Dangerous because for the longest time she was just a tiny fairy to him. Something he could tuck in his hoodie pocket or was able to perch on his shoulder. Making such a cake that made him truly look at her would mean that it was blatant that she was trying to appear before him. As anything other than a tiny and unlovable fairy. It was, after all, Mamatooth that had a feeling for Jack wasn't it?

All of the tiny fairies that were born from their mother were prone to feeling her emotions in such an exaggerated degree. The first moment Babytooth remembered seeing Jack was at the meeting of all of the Guardians, and her sisters fell all over themselves for the boy. Were not those the emotions from their Mamatooth that had to hold in her feelings from the surface in order to do her job? Remain professional? Babytooth worried about this even as she didn't show the same swooning reaction to Jack.

What was it about her that made her not react the same way as her sisters? Was she so far removed from them and attached to their mother that she was immune to the exaggerated attraction they held for him? The idea made her metaphorical feathers ruffle in worry and her bright blue eyes looked up to Hazel as she was alight with the question of what Itzel thought.

"They are all...so lovely," and she was scanning the pages with her eyes - saying it with complete sincerity. But there was that sadness hovering in her voice and she wondered just what was going to happen with her and Jack. He was a human boy now where everyone could see him. Beautiful girls all over New York and here she was just an overly colorful little pixie-cut haired quiet girl that made cupcakes. She was his past, a figment of a time lost to them both. And her crush was likely to be forgotten and she would never be anything but a tiny fairy in his eyes.

She felt her eyes warm and tingly with the tears she was holding back and she got up from her stool and moved so that she wasn't facing Hazel at all. She bit her bottom lip and willed the tears to leave her face. This was just her own mind whirling and her own insecurities working as a road-block. She wanted to be the kind of girl that made gorgeous cakes for the boy she liked and just smile coyly and cutely at him. But...she was not.

And she feared that doing such a thing would only make him laugh at her for thinking she even had a chance. Not that someone as sweet as Jack would do such a thing to her face. But it was so secret that he was a very sparkling individual and it was only a matter of time before he chose someone he wanted and captured their heart. But Itzel didn't feel like something as tiny as a little hummingbird-hearted fairy would ever have a chance at getting her heart captured by Jack Frost.

It was just...not something that could happen.

Good morning & good night
I wake up in twilight
It's gonna be alright
We don't even have to try
It's always a good time!
It never came as a surprise to those who worked with Hazel that she was very passionate about everything she did. Being a squirrel in a past life, she was unable to speak; so she played through her actions and emotions. When an idea came to her mind, she had to let it all out. If not, it would simmer and bubble and put her in a terrible funk. It would plague her for days on end and she would just churn out poorly drawn or baked goods until she finally did what her brain told her to do.

The downside to this? Anyone trying to work with her became overwhelmed with all of her ideas. As it was, if Hazel had been paying attention to her beloved Itzel, she would have noticed the poor girl's reactions to Hazel's onslaught of ideas. Unlike some of her other companions in the bakery, Itzel was the quietest. The most reserved. The one who did everything in small proportions- who liked things simple, despite the colorful addition she added to her hair. Hazel should've known that her ideas were going to be too far out there for her.

As she waved to the customer, she noticed that Itzel was just standing there. Staring over the ideas she had just sketched out for her. Her crystal blue eyes were glossed over, and she was biting her lip. Oh no... Before Hazel could properly react, Itzel had her back towards her. Her hands were covering her face and Hazel felt everything around her shatter into a million tiny pieces. Her chest constricted into a painful knot, and she quickly looked around the now empty bakery. She needed to do something.

In a drastic call, Hazel rushed to the door and flipped the sign over to 'closed,' and turning the clock for an hour later and locking the door. Itzel was more important than the customers right now. they could wait an hour or so, right? Rushing back to Itzel, she stood beside the girl with her hands just inches from her shoulders, biting her own lip in worry. "It-itzel?" Hesitantly, she rested her hand upon the small girl's shoulder. "I'm, I'm really sorry." Her face was contorted into distress mixed with fear. She cared about her Itzel too much to see her cry.

"Pl-please don't cry...." She gently turned her around and wrapped her arms tightly around the girl. Tears started to well up in her eyes, so she tightly shut them. "We don't have to use those ideas. Itzel, please. I'm sorry!" She rested her cheek against the girl's head, and she gently stroked the back of her neck. "We can... we can bake him cookies instead!" She was worried, scared, terrified that she had upset Itzel. She was always so quiet, and the one time she managed to get her to talk openly, she had blown it out of proportions. How could she have been so stupid? "I'm so sorry 'Zel..."

Hazel was overly sweet to Itzel's reaction, and all the girl could do was hug Hazel back and enjoy the comforting nature of her amazing boss. She was more than just a boss, she was a dear friend. And she had only been excited a moment ago to make the grandest cake and the grandest gesture for someone that she knew was special to Itzel. And what did Zel do instead of going along with it and being as chipper as the sweet and ever-excited Hazel? She fell into a little cloud of despair and she felt herself slipping into it further until she wasn't able to be pulled out from it. From the idea that she was never going to be good enough for the one person that she wanted to know better than anyone.

But as Hazel's words came out as sugary and amazing as her confections that she made each day - Itzel felt herself calming. It was like the effect that Mamatooth had on her many mini-fairies, Itzel included. The warmth of Hazel as she lay her head atop the colorful pixie cut that Zel had, her hand stroking the back of her neck to lull her frazzled emotions - all of these things were helping. Helping to soothe the panic that had momentarily sent Itzel into something of a whirlwind. She was unsure how to react to such niceties when it was a simple social interaction, and never had to really let anyone get so close. But with Hazel it felt natural - she felt cared for. So her arms wrapped around Hazel's form and she sighed with a little relief as she embraced her back.

"I don't mean to be so...well, I don't mean to worry you."

Her voice was soft and muffled in Hazel's apron - and Itzel felt the tug that maybe she should try and make everything alright again somehow. That she should show Hazel just how strong she could be. How tough she was. Like she somehow went into stretches of being her aggressive fairy self and wanting nothing more than to be devious or creative and playful. And all of that would have been entirely possible...if this wasn't all about Jack. Jack was the one thing that could bring Itzel down into a swirl of emotions that she couldn't understand or translate. He was the one thing that always threw her a little off kilter. And she knew it wasn't an attractive trait, so she wondered if perhaps she could amend it somehow.

"I just - it's hard. He doesn't know I like him and I am just not sure that I am really to dive headfirst. I'm not as brave and wild as you," and to that Itzel offered a small smile.

So that Hazel could see the smile she pulled away a little from the hug, but because she didn't want to break this moment entirely she let her hands lock with Hazel's own. She gave them a friendly squeeze as she enhanced her smile a little, almost letting out a small laugh as she spoke again.

"I guess I am just not as sure of his feelings for me. But honestly each cake you talked about would be perfect treasures and I wouldn't have to tell them they were hand-crafted for him. I mean...maybe one day."

She ended up feeling the color flush to her cheeks as she said 'maybe one day' because that expression, in so many words, let her know that even in her lack of hope there was still a flickering flame that was alight. The little shred of herself that let the possibility linger like some stubborn thing. The small part of her mind that indulged to believe that maybe one day, as she was cheek to cheek with Jack after whispering that she did in fact feel for him, she could indeed tell him that the cakes were for him. Likely she could pass it off like they were extra cakes or cakes she did for fun, something commonplace that didn't let him know right off the bat that she cared so deeply. To do so was dangerous - but somehow the visual of watching his amused blue eyes sparkle as he leaned in to kiss her as a sort of 'thank you' for the sweet confession...it seemed possible.

And in the end that was likely why she smiled with her blushing cheeks and pulled Hazel into another hug. A happier one that wasn't so saturated with sadness. The girl had not only single handedly come up with the most amazing and flawless cake ideas, she had also comforted Itzel from the curve of sadness and propelled her back to a little fluttering creature of hope and belief.

So Itzel pulled away from the sweet hug again and she sighed out with a bit of rosy color still in her cheeks at just how odd this all was and how utterly she had morphed from one emotion to the other - and she looked at Hazel. Her words still soft and shy.

"Which one do you want to make first?"

Good morning & good night

As Itzel wrapped her small arms around Hazel's waist, she couldn't help the little chitter that bubbled in her throat. It was a sound her older squirrel friend would make on days Hazel was sad. If it had once helped Hazel, surely it would help Itzel as well? She continued to gently stroke the back of Itzel's neck, Hazel felt awful about the entire situation. She was such a bubbly thing at times, that Hazel tend to forget just how fragile the young one could be. As Itzel started to apologize, Hazel gave her a gentle squeeze.

"Now, now Little Itzel. You have nothing to apologize for."

She was going on about not being good enough. Not being enough like Hazel. The words she spoke broke her squirrely little heart as tears welled up in her eyes. Oh Little Itzel, whatever has you thinking like this? How could someone so sugary sweet have such sour thoughts running through their head?

Itzel had pulled away now, smiling softly up at her with the tenderest of smiles. It made her heart crumple more than her Sunday Crumb Cake. It was all too much to bare and as Itzel gripped her hands, she squeezed her small hands in concern. At least she was smiling more than before- that was good. What mattered at the moment though, was if that smile was true or if she was painting it on to keep Hazel from worrying.

"Don't fret little Zel. Just- show your true colors and he'll notice you soon enough." She smiled softly down at Itzel, silently letting her know she understood. "I'm so glad you like them though, even though they made you sad. We can always start small, simpler than what I went out on a limb with."

The young girl's cheeks started to turn pink at the comment, and Hazel was ever-so-curious to know what was going on in her head. What little buzzing hummingbird was fluttering inside her Pixie cut that made her blush like that? Thankfully for Itzel, she pulled Hazel int for another hug. Surely Itzel would have squeaked had she seen the grin that was plastered to Hazel's puffed out cheeks.

When Itzel pulled back from the hug, Hazel quickly morphed the smirk upon her face into a solid smile, brushing the moisture from under her eyes. Tilting her head as she gently tapped a finger to her chin, pondering on what the could make today. Hhmmmmmmmmmm

"Well, as a student of mine once said: 'Bake all of the things!'."

Laughing softly at the thought of Vanessa's reaction to the cake pops, Hazel pulled her hair back into a ponytail and twitched her nose in a rather squirrely manner. "First things first. We have this wonderful little bakery all to ourselves for about an hour before I reopen. Let's start off with some tea, then see where that takes us."

Twirling on her toes, she scurried over to the little radio she kept by the register for rainy days when the shop was slow. Flipping it on, the end of a rather intense rock song was fading to the end, and without missing a beat, the next song started playing. Her face exploded into an overgrown smile as she instantly recognized the song. "Itzel! This is my favorite song!"

Bobbing her head along to the beat, Hazel rushed back over to Itzel and grabbed her hands once more. With another laugh, she twirled the young girl around, singing in key with the song while her face was nothing but giggles and smiles.

"Oh Girls! They wanna have fun!!"
