Into the sea, I am gifted

He'd been meaning to come here for a while now, but between the baby and the resistance...well free time was limited. He realized that he'd been carrying a lot of fears lately; fear of beasts, fear of loss, fear of failure, and perhaps the oldest of them all: fear of the sea. While some of these fears would not be easily overcome, and he was willing to carry them as long as they didn't interfere with his life. Still some of those fears he could face. Perhaps it was fatherhood making him bold, or maybe without John around he felt like he needed to step up somehow. He'd never imagined himself as leader, never even really considered himself a soldier. Yet someone had to, didn't they? The other colonists that stayed with him wouldn't listen to anyone else, though how he'd managed to get their respect he'd never know. Sure his aim had improved markedly and he'd found some sort of backbone in all this, but he was still the boy that dreamed of a good home and a family to fill it. Simple dreams, for a simple man.

Except none of that was exactly true was it? He wasn't that boy anymore, and his dreams though still simple, were altered considerably. There was no denying that he moved like a soldier now, ever vigilant to the world around him. He carried himself, his weapons, his morals with that staunch military training he'd never meant to receive. Years of hardship had taken their toll on him and he'd be lying to himself if he said that the person looking back at him in the mirror was the same one who set out so enthusiastically for a new world all those years ago. Somehow despite being a failure at nearly everything he tried, he'd finally found things he was good at. He might not have been ready to take on any sore of leadership role, but somehow he'd blossomed under the pressures of his men. He imagined it started way back on that fateful day when they'd stared down the barrels of their guns at the 'savages'. When he'd finally stepped up to Ratcliffe and found that leadership didn't chafe quite so much as he thought it would. Of course then John had gotten better and he'd happily stepped back for his friend.

Now John wasn't here, and he was. He didn't doubt that his friend was alive somewhere, doing something both brave and stupid, but he couldn't just sit and wait either. He needed to decide for himself, figure himself out, if he was going to do any good in this war.

So he decided, that once his child was born, he'd try his hardest to face the fears that still crippled him. He might never overcome them completely, and he didn't want to be the kind of man who believed himself fearless when that wasn't the case. No man could be truly without fear. Fear is what kept you alive, as long as you didn't let it over power you. What he wanted, was to be able to say that he stood up to it and taken his strength from it.

Which was why he was standing in the one place he'd avoided as often as he could. He could remember the voyage back to England and then the one that took them back to the New World. Both times he'd stayed up most nights praying that the voyage went smooth, clinging to the nearest solid object every time the ship was jolted. Which considering the nature of the ocean was just about every day. Actually going into the water was another matter entirely. Even after all this time he could still wake from a nightmare of that darkness closing in over his head.

Looking out at the sea now, there was a constricting feeling in his chest. A cold wind ruffling the fur of the wolf coat he'd taken to wearing as the season crept ever closer to winter. This close to the ocean the air was frigid, salty spray splashing up against his face. It was hard to imagine that this place might have once been a beacon to wayward sailors, a welcoming sight no doubt to those long lost at sea. Seeing the lighthouse in darkness, no light shinning through its cracked windows, made him think about their world. Would they ever get a chance to turn the light back on?

Kneeling among the rocks at the base of the lighthouse, watching as the waves crashed up from the sea. It was low tide so even this close not too much water was reaching him. The ocean was black and wide, frothing and angry as it rolled up from the depths. He was safe here, but even then he could feel the anxiety tightening in his chest. Letting himself sit on a particular flat rock, he fished a small wooden block and carving knife from his knapsack. "Nothing to do but get used to you." He muttered out at the sea, head tilting as his fingers found their path along the wood. His gaze focused on the waves, three hours before he was expected anywhere. Three hours to try and feel like the ocean wasn't out to get him.

But, Bernard, the Society's counting on us. We can't quit now. Oh, and that little girl. We just have to rescue her.

Miss Bianca

The air was getting colder and colder as winter approached and the winds were getting stronger and stronger. It made it a little more difficult for a little mouse like Miss Bianca to do much traveling on the animated side of the portal. She could do little to protect herself against the horrible Darkness creatures, so her main source of defense was hiding. Miss Bianca might be small, but she refused to allow her size to get in the way of doing amazing things with her life. If she had let that bother her, she never would have joined the Rescue Aid Society in the animated world. Over the course of the time she’d spent working with the resistance, she’d developed quite a few friendships with beings that were able to accompany her around the animated world. They were mostly birds and squirrels and things of the like.

One by one, though, her friends were disappearing. Her squirrel friend, Roy, never showed up the last time she crossed over and she still hadn’t seen him. Miss Bianca just added him to the list of people that she was concerned about, like Mr. Bernard and Penny. It broke her heart because she thought that the three of them had a fairly happy ending after their little adventure. Penny had gotten adopted by two wonderful people and Miss Bianca and Mr. Bernard were official partners in the Rescue Aid Society. She kept an eye out for all of these people as she traveled through the animated world. She’d had no luck so far, but she was not going to give up.

Today was another day where one of her allies did not show up at their usual meeting point – right outside of the portal on the animated side. It was a little sparrow named Mabel. The sparrow was getting up in years, which just made Miss Bianca even more concerned for the poor dear. After waiting and waiting, she finally decided that she needed to keep moving. It could be rather dangerous for her to stay in one place for too long, even so close to the portal. If a Darkness creature didn’t come, there was always the chance that she might get trampled by others that were crossing back and forth between the worlds.

And so she kept moving. Miss Bianca had heard some disturbing things from some of the other scouts about the old deserted lighthouse. None of them went into too much detail, since they weren’t quite sure what was going on in the general area. Since she couldn’t get the answers to her questions from the other scouts, she decided to head in that direction to find out for herself. Maybe she could find something that the other scouts couldn’t and bring word back to the camp.

The air got even colder as she approached the beach, so she pulled the collar of her coat closer to her neck. Miss Bianca had obviously lost all of her beautiful clothing when she had to be rushed across the portal. It was a problem that was easily fixed, though. As a human, she’d gotten into the habit of sewing together little mouse outfits for herself. They were naturally smaller replicas of the highest fashion. Just because she was a mouse didn’t mean she couldn’t be fashionable!

Miss Bianca leapt into the air to grab her hat that the strong wind had picked up right off her head. As she approached the edge of the water, she caught sight of a familiar figure. She opened her mouth to call to him, but quickly realized that he probably would not hear her tiny voice over the roaring of the waves nearby. As she moved closer, she couldn’t help but notice how hard he was staring at the sea. There was no denying that the look on the dear’s face made him appear very unsettled, indeed. It was some sort of uncertainty, but Miss Bianca couldn’t quite determine what kind. She moved forward, climbing on the rocks until she reached him. “Thomas!” she called, but it was right when a loud wave splashed. She swiftly moved up his pant leg until she was resting on his knee. “Thomas, darling,” she said, gently reaching up to tap his arm,”Are you alright?

Ooc: I assumed they would know each other since they both work with the resistance. I hope that’s alright! ^^

Into the sea, I am gifted

He'd been fortunate it seemed, to have picked today to sit by the ocean. Considering how chaotic the waters usually were these days, thanks in no small part to the darkness he suspected. It was relatively calm out there. Sure the waves still crashed against the shore with a fury that roared in his ears, but it was nothing compared to how bad he'd seen things get before. The ocean seemed to have been hit the hardest when everything went sour. Causing waves to boil and froth as thought in a constant storm. He'd heard stories of how bad it was under the surface, worse then even what he could see. Creatures twisted by the darkness into sea monsters worse then all the legends he'd ever heard the sailor's spouting. It made him wonder if perhaps his fear wasn't quite as irrational as he led himself to believe. After all, it wasn't like the ocean wasn't dangerous, or hadn't always been. Even before the darkness there had been storms and creatures lurking beneath the sea. He himself was a testament to just how bad things could get out there. Having been thrown from the deck of the ship like a sack of potatoes and nearly lost forever beneath those black waves.

For a moment his vision filled with the site. Remembering what it had been like when the sudden realization that he was going to die struck him. It was like getting stabbed in the chest by a knife carved from ice. He had no hopes that anyone would come get him, it's not like it is in the other world. Where a person missing at sea is actually looked for and occasionally rescued. In his time, in the middle of a storm no less, getting thrown overboard was as sure a death as getting stabbed or shot. Thomas liked to believe that it wasn't so much luck or even fate that had intervened on his part, but rather John himself had chosen his fate. It was the main reason he was so loyal to the other man, why he believed even now that his friend was still alive out there. Whether he was off fighting the darkness in his own way, or in the real world hiding, didn't matter to Thomas. All that mattered was that the person he owed his life too was alive somewhere. And that he took this chance to overcome his own fears. He might never be as brave as some others but he tried and he worked at it. A task that seemed to have grown increasingly difficult after his return from the coma.

The entire world felt surreal now. Like he wasn't quite sure which was the dream and which was reality, or where he belonged in all of this. In a way this attempt to face his oldest and most deep seated fear was also a way to cement himself into reality. It was the only way he knew that could somehow bring everything back into focus, or at least he hoped it was.

He was so lost in his thoughts and the waves crashing that he'd long since forgotten the piece of wood he'd been carving. There was no shape to it now, nor would there probably ever be considering the haphazard marks he'd been making. He wasn't even really paying attention enough to feel the slight sensation of movement on his knee, not till a soft voice drew him away from all that. His inner turmoil and the replay of that night at sea, slipping away as his eyes drifted down to the little mouse perched on his leg. It was surprise to see her there, but instinct had his hand moving to offer her some semblance of shelter from the strong ocean winds.

"Miss Bianca?" The surprise was evident on his face, as his head cocked slightly to the side in an attempt to better hear what she was saying. For a moment his gaze drifted back to the sea and he didn't rightfully know how to answer her question. After all it was no secret that he hadn't been doing alright for quite a while, and coming out here wasn't helping much of any. Yet he also didn't want to cause her any unnecessary fretting. Turning his attention back to her, he shrugged a shoulder. "Distracted." He finally said, feeling that as far as answers went this one was somewhere in the middle. Neither here nor there in regards to how he really might be feeling. "I'll be alright." He offered her a smile, before concern quickly replaced it.

"What are you doing all the way out here...and on your own?" His brows furrowed, head turning to look around for anyone else she might have come with only to find the area around them vacant and eerily silent. Looking back down at her he frowned. "It's dangerous." Never mind of course that he'd been sitting out here on his own, lost to the world around him.

Miss Bianca

Miss Bianca was really unable to do a whole lot for the Resistance. If only she were bigger. If she could possibly be her human self on this side of the portal, she would be able to do much more good. She had begun to dabble in physical fighting and gunmanship because she had gone on missions that were far more dangerous than she’d ever gone on with the original Rescue Aid Society. Of course, a big part of that might be because of the Darkness falling. Where she was from, there was no magic or supernatural beings or occurrences. The Darkness falling forced her and people with similar experiences as her to be introduced to beings that possessed magical powers. Thankfully, there were members of her Society that were gifted with powers like that. Unfortunately, Miss Bianca had no way to battle those beings herself.

Of course, just because she didn’t have any magical powers did not mean that she couldn’t do anyone any good. Why, if Miss Bianca refused to let her size get in her way, why would she let her lack of magical powers get in her way? She had proven that the only thing you really need to make a difference is a good heart and a stubborn attitude – and, of course, an impeccable fashion sense really didn’t hurt, either. Miss Bianca did not let anything get in her way and she wasn’t about to start now.

At this point in her life, she couldn’t actually say that she completely regretted the Darkness falling. Of course, she hated that she had lost Bernard and Penny and the rest of the original Rescue Aid Society. She hated the dangers that people were into, but Miss Bianca was always one to find the silver lining in a black cloud. She was so glad that she had the change to be turned into a human. It was the reason she spent so much more time on this real world side of the portal, as she quickly learned that she was much more useful as a human woman that stood at five feet, six inches, as opposed to a small mouse who only stood a few inches tall. Of course, Miss Bianca came to this side of the portal when she was needed. While only being a small mouse, she wanted to play her part in assisting the resistance and the brave people who fought with it.

Like Thomas, for instance. It was clear that he had a good heart. Miss Bianca caught onto it practically right away! She did not know him well, but she always was a good judge of character. He was one of the very brave leaders of the resistance. Sometimes she did wonder if it was really the right thing for him. She supposed, though, if that position had fallen on his shoulders, dear Thomas had to be able to hold his own against the terrifying Darkness creatures.

His good heart showed its sparkling head when he reached down and used his hand as a shield for Miss Bianca against the strong winds. She was relieved. It saved her from having to run after her hat again and again. Perhaps she should have worn a scarf around her head. She would have to remember that for next time. “Oh, thank you, darling. That’s much better,” she said with a sigh as she delicately placed her hat back on her head.

Miss Bianca tilted her head to the side when Thomas finally responded to her question. She couldn’t quite tell if he was telling the truth or not. A part of her was leaning towards the latter. Whoever gave an honest answer to that question when there was something actually bothering them?

Before she could give a response to his answer, though, he immediately shot back with his own question, panic in his voice. She covered her mouth as she quietly chuckled. “Now, now, Thomas! Do not let my size fool you. I can hold my own, even in a place like this,” she said with the very hint of stubbornness to her voice,”Besides, I could ask you the very same question. It’s dangerous everywhere on this side of the portal, no matter one’s size.

None of my usual companions showed up today, so I had no choice but to go on by myself. Some of the other scouts made some strange comments about the lighthouse, so I thought I ought to take a look,” she said, folding her hands together. There. She had answered his question honestly and she hoped that he would do the same.

What brought you out here, darling?
