It made her feel grown up and capable of doing something right, and the money she earned was all hers to do with as she liked (and as she needed, with some of it, but only some). She had never put much thought into what kind of a job she would have when she grew up, back home in Burgess, but she had known that she wasn't exactly an academic type and that the "good" jobs liked to ride on grades and how smart you looked on paper. She had never thought about working in a bakery before, and now she couldn't imagine not working in one. Miss Hazel was, Fiona was sure, the best boss ever. Even when Fiona messed up on something-- which wasn't often, but everyone made mistakes sometimes-- Hazel was supportive and never condescending as she showed her how to fix it. Itzel and Hespera were pretty great to work with, too. Without a doubt, working there had helped her blossom into the person she had adjusted into since the move from the animated world, and every day she was excited to go in to work and feel useful and good at something, and to remember there were people who liked her and were her friends. That was, after all, what she had promised herself she would try to make happen for herself in honor of her lost Burgess friends, so shortly after she'd finally warmed up to them.As it was, today was no exception. A smile was firmly settled on her face through her trek to the bakery, and she was determined to bring that kind of smile to the others. She knew some not so nice things had happened in Itzel's life recently, and though she wasn't completely informed on the details-- and she wasn't insensitive enough to ask, wow, rudeness-- she knew the decent and friendly thing to do was to try and keep her spirits up. That was what friends were for. That was what their beautiful little store was for, too, and Fiona was sure she was at least on the right track. "Hellooo!" she announced herself, as she nudged her way in through the door, sign still turned to closed, her arms full with a white box she was very protective over. "I know Miss Hazel must be here somewhere, anyone else?" She shivered slightly as her body made the adjustment from chilly winter air to the comfort of the indoors. It already smelled good in there, and she helped herself to a big breath of air. Yum. Pleased smile still in place, she walked up to the counter and set down her box, shaking her arms out of her coat afterward. "I tried to make some donuts on my own, you guys! They're kind of little and obviously won't be as amazing as Hazel's but I tried!" She wasn't shouting, not really, just trying to make sure anyone who was there could hear her, wherever they were. Her treats were important to start their day off right. Folding back the lid so they were on display, she grabbed one and happily took a bite as she walked off behind the scenes to hang up her coat and cupcake beanie. They sure weren't Hazel's, but they weren't bad.

somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue

Ever since Christmas, the bakery had been Zel's favorite haunt. Nothing about his bakery was scary. Everything about it was light and happiness and community, charity, kindness. It was a beacon of positive energy and that was something she most definitely needed. Christmas was a time of despair and utter terror. It was something she wished she could forget. All of the hurt and blood and pain she saw as she was finally reunited with a beaten Ender. And the terrors she was assaulted with. Leaving her shaking and upset as she sank to her knees and cried seeing Ender so broken. She closed her eyes and her hands braced the counter again. Closed them tight and counted backwards.

Ten. Nine..Eight...Seven....Six

She took a deep breath, smelling the frosting mixture she had just made from scratch. She had already made a cheesecake-raspberry one and a honey-citrus one. Now she was making a caramel and white chocolate mixture and the aroma was amazing. She felt herself exhale and the horrors of the images that the nightmare had given her...they were finally leaving. She caught sight of the colors she wore. The cute ice-cream charm around her neck. The sight of the bakery walls. The little cork-board with happy smiling faces in photographs she had taken. And she looked at her phone, knowing she could text Ender because he was, after all okay. And so she stood up again, hands wiping at her apron before smoothing her hair and finishing her counting.

"Five. Four. Three. Two. And one."

And she took another deep breath and shook the bad thoughts from her mind. She wouldn't worry about it now. And surely soon enough people would be filing in on time. She was, of course, way early. After everything at the hospital she had hoped it was alright to be coming in early. She knew Hazel was a beacon of sweetness and Zel had shortly explained what had happened over text messages and assured Hazel that she wasn't hurt. Not physically anyway. But after feeling fear magic assault her and the worry for Ender leaving her at his bedside nearly all night and day - she was far from fine. And she kept her phone on her all times. This bakery and all the people in it were just...they were a wonderful escape. A great little sweet-tasting therapy.

She heard someone come in and her frosting was nearly mixed so she finished whipping it up as the voice of Cupcake herself came to her ears - making the little fairy smile a little. Glad to know that he could see and hug her friend. When the girl came around the corner with her coat and the donuts she had said she made, Zel beamed a smile at her and walked over for a fierce hug. It was one of those hugs that meant she was glad to see Cupcake. Glad to know her. Happy to see her safe. One of those tight hugs where you really mean it. She pulled away only to look at the girl with sweetness and love for a second, all before she actually saw the donut in the girl's hand and she made a little happy surprised sound.

"That looks delicious! I wanna try!" and she turned the corner to grab one of her own. Something told her a dab of her frostings that could be used for the day might be nice dabbed onto a bite or two of these. But first things first - the initial bite of Cupcake's handiwork.

Squirrel Girl

everywhere is balanced there like a rainbow
The silver sound is all around and the colors fall like snow.

Tapping the end of her pen against the side of her cheek, Hazel bobbed on the heels of her toes as she took inventory. It was a grueling and tedious job, but it was something that she knew needed to be done. And seeing how Itzel was still shaken from Christmas, she knew she couldn't ask the little faeling to do it, even if she insisted she was alright. Though the little rainbow haired girl's memory would be very much helpful in this moment, as Hazel looked down at the list that was last months before looking back up at the shelf before her. Apparently she went on a bit of a spending splurge? She didn't remember buying those snowflake sprinkles, or had she always had them?

Maybe she needed to stop shopping online in the wee hours of the morning while Brenna slept. That might help.

Itzel was there long before Hazel made it, and she couldn't help but hold the girl for awhile as they stood in the silence of the shop. A lot had happened, and she felt so terrible not knowing how to make it better- even if her feelings towards the boy who was hurt wasn't the greatest, she knew Itzel cared about him more than Hazel could comprehend. All she could do was make sure there was a smile on the young girl's face, no matter what the cause.

Which was why she called the other girls, asking if they'd all come in. The holidays were over, and she was busy making sure the last minute details of the upcoming Opaline wedding were coming in. She still needed to actually make the small birds and mice that would adorn the smaller cakes, still had a grooms cake to make. She was going to be a busy little squirrel as January came full circle. She would leave the rest of the shop in the hands of the girls, completely faithful that they would be able to keep the orders filled and have everything running smoothly while she stayed locked (not really) in the back playing with fondant and mixing icing colors.

Cupcake's voice echoed in from the front of the building and Hazel's eyes grew wide with excitement. Someone else was here! Yes good. Placing the notebook upon a stack of cake boxes, Hazel almost threw herself from the stock room, catching onto the doorframe as she saw the two girls hugging through the small mirror of the doors. A warm smile crossed her face as she quietly made her way towards the front.

Gently pushing the swinging door open she leaned against the door frame as Itzel thanked her for coming in. "You'll never know how much seeing you girls get along makes me feel." Her eyes trailed over to the box that Cupcake brought in with her, and a wicked grin splayed across her face. "Ooohhhhhhh is that what I think it is? Was my little Cupcake using her Christmas present? Ohhhh what'd you make?" Making her way to the counter she peeked in and squeaked excitedly at the sight of the mini donuts that greeted her vision. "Donuts!," she squeaked before reaching into the box she took one and popped it into her mouth, shivering as the sugary treat raced through her.

"Fees arre geud!" Practically skipping around the corner she wrapped an arm over Itzel and Cupcake's shoulders, pulling them both into a hug as she smiled at them. "I'm glad you could come in Cupcake, it's going to be a busy, busy, busy month for us!"

It showed her she could do something, something useful (and tasteful, pun intended) that people could universally appreciate. It was something helpful, not isolating or defensive. There were other things that she was good at as well, but what good was being able to stay alive in a computer game out there in real life? No, the bakery had shaped her as a person. It gave her the skills to not only make a variety of delicious treats, but she could talk to people, she could do math (well, basics, the kind a cash register required or quickly tallying up an estimate when taking an order over the phone or anything like that). Frankly she could do just about anything the job could ask of her, and on top of all of that, the bakery gave her friends. She would have done anything for each one of them, no questions asked, at the drop of a hat, and maybe they weren't all the closest, maybe they didn't share everything with each other or weren't joined at the hip, but where it mattered most, it was undeniable that they all still cared. Moments like this one reminded her of that. The strength of Itzel's hug surprised her, but she was more than happy to return it, feeling like a kid again inside like she did with every small reminded that she really did have friends here. She thought Jamie and the others would have been proud. "Hey, Zel."At the sound of Hazel and as their hug pulled apart, she smiled-- smiled more than she already was, more accurately-- rubbing the back of her neck with a little grin at the further acknowledgment. "Yeah, I mean like I said they sure aren't yours, but..." Trailing off, not wanting to repeat herself, her shoulders shrugged while the verdict remained out just yet. "Mixer works great by the way." Of course it did; as if Hazel would gift her girls with mixers that worked anything less than that. What utter nonsense. She looked calm externally, but on the inside she waited anxiously for the seal of approval. This was important. At home she experimented with cooking creations frequently, but it wasn't all that often she ventured to bring them anywhere else for anyone else's consumption and judgment. It was like an episode of Chopped, only with 500 times less pressure and no other contestants. Once she had it, she grinned, a little something beyond that lighting up her face. "You like 'em?" Well, obviously. Hazel wouldn't lie, especially about food. Especially about food she taught her girls to make. She managed to snag another small tidbit for herself and took a bite as Hazel bounced along again, unable to help her smile. Hazel's enthusiasm was completely infectious at all times. "Oh?" she asked, intrigued and raising an eyebrow before it hit her, and she snapped her fingers at the thought. "Oh! The wedding!" Honestly, Hazel had so far done most of the work to do with that big event, so it wasn't too much of a stretch for it to have temporarily slipped Cupcake's mind. The closer the day got, the more pressing it would be for all of them. Just not quite yet. "Whatcha need from us today, boss?" She popped the second half of her donut in her mouth with the end of the question, munching happily.

somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue

Busying herself with work and school and studying was one way to try and quit worrying about Ender. But that was the curse that came with the blessing of a memory where she could recall anything to her mind's eye. Every single horror that was pushed into her mind. Every utterance from the evil man's mouth. Every broken bone and pulled feather and painful gargle of blood in the throats of her sisters. That was what assaulted her even though the fiend of a man was no longer there. And Ender? Seeing him so wounded and hurt? Zel had taken to actually sitting in the room next to him as he lay there so heavily medicated that all he could do was sleep. Woodrow and her were the only two that really haunted Ender's bedside.

It pained Zel to see so little care for him - but deep her in heart she knew it was different for them. Woodrow was, in many ways, like a father for Ender. And her? She was...something. A friend maybe. A friend when nobody else, even his brothers, might risk sitting in a hospital for too long lest an official see them ask them questions or pull them aside to ask them about some crime they committed a while back. Either that or they just had to play the tough-guy persona and sitting at their 'brother's bedside was just too fluffy. In Zel's opinion it was all rubbish. And so she stayed by Ender's bed and fell asleep in the chair next to him enough to make up for the lack of presence in the boy's life.

"These are really good," she said with a little smile in Cupcake's direction. They really were good and now the sugared glaze coating was melting on her tongue and keeping her distracted from the bitter, as ironic as that was. Sugar to soften the bitterness of the world. Maybe that was why she had always had such a sweet-tooth. It was quite odd for a Tooth Fairy's helper to have such a craving for sugar wasn't it? Maybe her idea that the sweet diffused the sour made sense of it all.

And Hazel, with all of her light and hope and happiness, was like a dose of sugar all on her own. It made Zel's smile broaden. She really was blessed to have such amazing people in her life. And so she was glad to be pulled into the hug with her fantastic boss and the coolest girl from the world of Burgess that she knew was a local haunt of the Guardians back in the day. Back when the animated world wasn't bleak and sour and it was still infused with a bit of that metaphorical sugar.

"Yeah. Anything you need, we're here," Zel knew she sounded distant and far away - like a pale shade of her usual colors even if she was wearing as many bright hues as she could find her closet that day. She would shake from this fear and this sadness soon she knew it. And if she knew anything about Cupcake and Hazel then she knew they would only quicken that healing. They were angels like that. Guardians in their own right. And Zel found herself eager for a job and actually smiling a genuine smile for the first time in a long time as she looked at her two cohorts.

Squirrel Girl

everywhere is balanced there like a rainbow
The silver sound is all around and the colors fall like snow.

A smile broke over her face as she held both of her girls close. They were like a family, the three of them and Hespera. A tight knit family that only grew stronger over time. They were there for each other, and she knew that no matter what happened in their lives they would always have someone to turn to, even if they weren't at the bakery anymore. That was something Hazel reminded them of time and time again. She knew they wouldn't always want to be here. They were still young, with a life still ahead of them. They were all destined for greatness, and she knew that when they would look back she would be a fond memory that they kept in their hearts.

So know that they kept up baking outside of work only made her heart overflow with admiration. Nodding her head she took another one and popped it into her mouth as Cupcake questioned her. They were light, and their coating was smooth. Without a doubt these would have their own spot in her casing. Licking her lips she smiled at both of them as they asked what they could help with. "For starters, I'm going to make a tag for these donuts, so everyone can get a taste of what my Cupcake can do." Smiling at them, she took another donut as she twirled and made her way behind the counter to grab her post-it notes. She was lucky enough to find a cupcake, a tooth, and flower shaped pads when she went in search of more acorn shaped notes.

"Secondly, I do have projects for the both of you. First and foremost, I need you both to keep an eye out on the front of the store. You both know what to do, and I have complete faith in you." Popping her third donut in her mouth, she started filling out the post-it with a description of Cupcake's donuts. "I think we can get away with six of these for two dollars," looking up she grinned at Cupcake as she held up the post-it. "What do you think?"

Sticking the post-it to the other side of the counter, smile pulled out the heavily creased piece of paper that had the full list of to-dos for the wedding. Making a quiet chittering noise, she ran her eyes over the readily marked paper before folding it again and keeping it close in her back pocket. "We still have a lot of whoopie pies to make. And I mean a lot. So we should get started on those, I would suggest making the frosting first, so we have it all stashed for when the cakes come out of the oven." Tapping her finger to her chin she thought about what else she could have them do. She was in charge of the cakes, she still had fondant to mess with, there were the little whoopie pies she had entrusted to the girls. "There are also cupcakes. Millions of cupcakes that will storm the wedding and have a complete take-over!" She laughed as she tucked some hair behind her ear.

"Well, not an entire take over. But there's a lot of cupcakes that need made. I'll work on making the list of flavors up today for you girls. Oh! And inventory." With a shudder she turned her head to eye the door that held the entrance to the storage in the back. "You both really need to tell me 'No' when I suggest we need twenty different colors of cupcake paper. I honestly swear I never remember buying half of the things back there...."
