kick them down

There wasn't really a reason to be doing this, she didn't need a reason. She liked to think she'd grown out of some of her brash and headstrong ways. No more charging into the heat of battle with no intention of ever coming back. The Gods had given her a level head that knew what it was doing, so she really should be using it more often. Not to say that she didn't, nor that her life was full of stupid decisions. It was just..every now and again she'd do something like this. Something that was equal parts stupid and dangerous. Something like charging into the warzone like someone onto a playing field. She knew better than anyone what was out there. Monsters, masked men, dragons, and a bunch of other beasts with no names and no souls. Things that could fell goods and probably took one look at her standing by herself with an ax in her hands and laughed.

Still, here she was. Alone with a wide grin on her face and a look in her eyes that could have been read as crazy. She really didn't have a reason to be here. Nothing except the adrenaline in her veins and an ingrown vikings recklessness even she couldn't shake. She liked to blame it on her competitive streak. She'd always had a need to prove herself as the best she could be, the one on top. Maybe that was why she was out here? She didn't have enough outlets for that competitiveness anymore, no more useless challenges to waste her time on.

Now all there was, was battle. She was good at it too.

"Is that all you got?" She chided, the ax in her hands spinning into a new position as she half crouched before her foe. Not a man or a beast, no of course not. That'd be far too easy. No, there was a dragon staring her down. Acid dripped from its mouth as it roared at her, one clawed foot stepping forward and crushing a pile of bones to dust.

She should have been thinking of Hiccup, who'd probably kill her for coming out here alone. Or any one of her friends, especially Stormfly who'd all no doubt never hear the end of it if she got hurt or worse. Not that thinking of any of that served as anything other then a distraction at this point. She'd already royally pissed it off, even if she ran this beast would come slithering after her with its acidic blood and drool making the ground steam and bubble. Nope. The only way she was getting out of this situation is with that dragon dead at her feet.

"Come on, you scared I'll cut your nose again." She smirked, and then dropped into a roll when it swung its tail around to try and strike her head. Popping back up a little to the side, she laughed "I'm pretty sure you're not even trying." It's mouth opened and it roared so loud that the rocks around them jiggled, and she flinched back from the sound.

She still managed to dodge the stream of acid that came shooting in her general direction. Though the sizzle and pop she heard and the slight burn she felt on one of her arms. Told her that at least a few small drops had hit home. "See, now we're getting somewhere."

Hm? Oh! Hi there! Is everything alright? I know everything around here seems scary, but there's nothing to be scared of! You see, there's this group. Filled with courageous beings. All looking out for you. Me? Oh. Heh. I'm just a nobody. Nothing special. But I'll help you the best I can.

what'll become of me,
Astrid

wordcount: 709 - notes: The things she does
Jumping over an overturned log, fear gripped inside of her at the dragon's roar. It echoed through the forest and she could almost bet it was coming towards the encampment. Too many stragglers were there for a dragon of all things to show up. Crouching low, she power slid under a partially uprooted tree before clambering back to her feet and running.

"And what do you expect to be able to do against a dragon?" The doubt rang loudly in her ears as her heart thumped against her rib cage. "You don't have any special powers. No special weapons training, let alone something to use against it." The blood pounded in her ears as she reached out, using a tree branch to turn as she skidded around an abandoned campsite. "No.," she stated out loud, slightly breathless. "But I'm able to distract it long enough for you to get to safer ground." The knowledge of her words hurt as she knew that's what she should have said instead of silently staring the man down. Instead of leaving them with the other Resistance members, she should have put him in his place. But that wasn't who she was. She didn't have the mouth like Astrid or Merida.

But she knew she had the heart.

Slipping behind a boulder, she closed her eyes as she tried to catch her breath. Even though she was so use to running, her body was still trying to catch up from the hiatus she'd taken almost four months ago. Finally able to walk without the aid of an ankle brace, she had started out slow: an attempt to get her back on her feet. Her rendezvous with Hiro six months ago left her battered and bruised in places she hadn't thought possible, but she'd acquired a friendship in the process. Sure. He may have been a royal pain when he wanted to refuse her company, but he was still her friend. She wasn't about to give up on him just yet.

Another roar had her gripping onto the boulder; the entire ground shaking beneath her. "Shit...," she muttered under her breath. It had to be close. Opening her eyes, she lifted them to the sky as she silently prayed to whomever would listen before pushing herself from her makeshift shelter and running towards the general direction.

The closer she got, the harsher the air around her became. Rotting earth filled her lungs, causing her to cough in protest of the sudden change in air purity. Taking a quick survey around as she continued to run forward, she couldn't help but wince at the size of the claw marks in the ground. How in the hell was she suppose to keep something of that size occupied without dying?

"Is that all you got?"

A voice. Female.

Skidding to a halt, she strained her ears as she tried to pick out the direction it was coming from. Please be who I think it is. Then her mind quickly thought about it. Please don't let her be doing what I think she's doing. Without wasting a breath, she took off once more, the sounds becoming more audible while the stench become more overwhelming. Stomach turning in knots, a hand quickly came to cover her mouth. It smells vial here.

Upon reaching the clearing, her eyes grew wide at the sight playing out before her. "Son of a...." Of course she was doing what she wasn't suppose to be doing. Dark eyes pulled themselves from the blonde with the battleaxe to the dragon that loomed just within tails reach from her. "Fucking hell..." Stabilizing herself, she willed herself invisible before charging in to assist her friend. Or, at least, let her know of the situation that was currently at hand. Though there was a slight hunch the blonde already knew, and had beaten her to the punch. Or, in this case, ax swing.

Coming up within feet of the blonde, there was just enough time to cry out her name before she threw her arm out, willing a shield around the girl as a stream of bile spat from the dragon's snout.

"You're not taking my friend you bastard!"

kick them down

Somewhere in the back of her mind a distant voice was very insistently reminding her how dangerous this was. The general tone and sound of that voice changed frequently. Sometimes it was Stoick's authoritative baritone chiding her, sometimes it was Hiccup's somewhat nasally concern. At one point it was even her friends; Thomas, Arthur, Lola, Meranda, and Stormfly reprimanding her in one large group. Telling her how facing a dragon alone was not just stupid, it was suicide.

In fact she had to do a double take when Lola's voice reached her, if only to make sure that it really was there to begin with. Just to make sure she really wasn't going crazy. After all it wasn't much of a stretch when one considered her heritage. The viking blood coursing through her veins was prone to acts of unnecessary recklessness. Her people after all having coined the Berserker fighting style. A strategy that usually involved running forward heedless of what stood ahead of you, and only caring about how many heads you could lop off before the gates of Valhalla opened in front of you. Astrid might not have been as reckless as most, but with each passing day she seemed to slowly edge closer to that ridge. The longer she went without knowing if Hiccup or her other friends were okay, the further and further her regard for personal safety seemed to slip.

As was evidenced by her current situation, though no more so then when the transparent purple shielding went up. Showing her how close she'd come to getting something far worse then a few stray drops of acid on her arm. Which hurt enough to elicit a couple choice Norse swears. Blue eyes widened in momentary shock, or perhaps even a hint of fear. Though it was gone as quickly as it came. Replaced by the half-crazed wide grin she generally sported in this kind of thing.

"Lola! You're joining the party?" The dragon seemed disgruntled that it's acidic breath hadn't hit its intended target, and Astrid wasn't surprised in the least. "We have a bit of an advantage now, thanks." She still couldn't see the other, but she'd been around her enough that she could get a general feel for how far her shield could extend. Not just that but she had a pretty good peripheral sense of her surroundings. Enough to feel like there was someone close by, even if she couldn't see the person.

Lifting her axe she gestured at the dragon that was stepping back and craning it's neck up like it was trying to figure out what had stopped its attack. "Swamp breath over there seems to need about six or seven minutes to recharge. Great, huh?" Of course there was still the long whipping tail, slashing claws, and razor sharp teeth to worry about but that was nothing. "Probably best you stay invisible though, keep him on his toes." And keep her safe, or at the very least safer then she'd be if she was standing out in the open. Her own eyes never left the dragon, bouncing from foot to foot with axe in hand, she scanned it for any possible openings. Weak spots in the scales or perhaps a wing joint she could cut off.
